Career Homework Exercise
The Strategy Development Process consists of: · Considering the threats and opportunities in the firm’s environment, · Considering the firm’s strengths and weaknesses, and · Then developing a strategy that matches the firm’s strengths with the opportunities, while avoiding the threats and weaknesses.In order for you to start a meaningful and productive career in production and operations management (or elsewhere), you must perform the same process on your own individual level. The primary purpose of this exercise is for you to determine your own strengths and weaknesses.
1. Evaluating your enjoyable activities, competencies, and career interests. You should be able answer the following questions:
What industry(s) am I interested in?
What am I good at?
What type of activities do I enjoy?
Do I prefer a formal or informal environment?
Do I want to work in groups or alone?
What kind of salary am I looking for?
Do I work best at a steady or fast pace?
2. Determine at least five realistic career possibilities in Production & Operations Management, stating the positions and the industries.


INSTRUCTIONS
Hard copy only and prepared by using Spreadsheets for computation questions and word processor for Essay questions.
The essay should be done on an individual basis. DO NOT CUT AND PASTE FROM THE INTERNET.
The essay should be approximately 1,000 words in length. Adhere strictly to within 10% of the word limit. Marks will be deducted for failure to reach the minimum word limit, and answers exceeding the word limit will not be marked.
The essay should be referenced and have a full bibliography attached.
The essay will lose 1 mark for each day or part thereof it is late. Papers may be handed in early to me personally or to my box (pigeon hole) beside the lecturers’ room, before they are due.
Essays must be word processed, in 12 point Times Roman or Arial font, with a spacing of 1.5 for the body of the text (but not footnotes), and spell-checked. The pages should be numbered.
Due date: Presentation and submission in Week 6 - 20th September 2005
Late Submission: Loss of one mark for each day late.
